Wellington Jighere
Wellington Jighere (born ) is a Nigerian ''Scrabble'' player. He won the World Scrabble Championship 2015, the first win for an African nation. He defeated Lewis MacKay in four straight wins. Jighere is nicknamed "The Cat in the Hat" for his quiet personality and fondness for hats. Career Jighere began playing ''Scrabble'' tournaments in 2002, after winning games versus friends in the tournament scene. He was the winner of the 2015 Scrabble World Championship, the first win for an African nation. After winning, he received a congratulatory phone call from president Muhammadu Buhari. He intended to appear in the World Scrabble Championship 2016, but the French government denied his passport, along with every other member of the Nigerian ''Scrabble'' team. In 2020, he announced his retirement from tournament ''Scrabble'', due to not being paid prize money. He unretired in 2023, making an appearance in the year's World Scrabble Championship. Collins Scrabble Words (CSW, formerly SOWPODS) is the word list used in English-language tournament Scrabble in most countries except the US, Thailand and Canada, although Scrabble tournaments in the US and Canada are also organized with divisions that use Collins Scrabble Words as their lexicon, some under the auspices of organizations such as the Collins Coalition. The term SOWPODS is an anagram of the two abbreviations '' OSPD'' (Official Scrabble Players Dictionary) and '' OSW'' (Official Scrabble Words), these being the original two official dictionaries used in various parts of the world at the time. The Scrabble Players Championship (formerly the North American Scrabble Championship, and earlier the National Scrabble Championship) is the largest ''Scrabble'' competition in North America. The event is currently held every year, and from 2004 through 2006 the finals were aired on ESPN and ESPN2. The MSI World Scrabble Championship 2017 was a Scrabble tournament organised by Mattel and Mindsports International (MSI) to determine the world champion in English Scrabble. It was held from 22 to 27 August in Nottinghamshire, England. WESPA Championship 2015
The WESPA World Scrabble Championship 2015 (also known as WESPA Championship or WESPAC) was organised by WESPA, the World English-language Scrabble Players' Association, which commissioned ASPA, the Australian Scrabble Players Association, to hold a World Scrabble Championship invitational event in Perth, Western Australia from November 4 to 8. The World Scrabble Championship 2007 was held in the Taj President Hotel, Mumbai, India between 9 November and 12 November. The winner was Nigel Richards of New Zealand. The tournament began with a 24-round Swiss tournament, whose top two players contested a best-of-five final. Results The preliminary stage involved 104 players, the largest number of players in WSC history, over 24 rounds, using the " Chew Pairing" system to select the draw for each round. Nigel Richards beat Ganesh Asirvatham of Malaysia 3–0 in the final. This was the first time either of them had reached the final.
